Pastoral Education, and
the Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. During his
college years, Jakes served in many capacities including
student representative for the Board of Governors for
State Colleges and Universities in Illinois, and as
President of the Student Government Association for
Chicago State University.
As a Baptist minister, Jakes earned the title of Reverend
Inspiration because of his ability to inspire those
around him. His is husband to Deborah L. Jakes, whom
he met in college, and has one child, Aisha who plans
to go to college and major in law. Rev. Jakes is also
the son to Ms. Lorraine Jakes, a former preschool teacher,
who currently serves as the Administrator of Music,
and Christian Education Director at Old Saint Paul Missionary
Baptist Church.
Jakes has a long history in standing up and speaking
out for his fellow man. This is reflected through his
involvement and many community achievements. Beginning
in 1980, he served the civil rights movement through
the Rainbow/PUSH organization where he served as Field
Coordinator, Director of Religious Affairs, and moderator
for the nationally acclaimed radio program, "The
PUSH is on."
Jakes was elected Co-chairman of the Concerned Citizens
of Schools Targeted, an organization formed in 1995
by local parents and residents to save and address the
six schools, which the Chicago Public School system
had as part of its closure hit list. In 1991, Rev. Jakes
served as District Administrator for the Second Congressional
District, under Augustus Savage. In 1996 he was elected
President of the Westside branch of the NAACP.

Rev. Jakes was called on to organize the ministry divisions for
various mayoral campaigns including, Tim Evans, Danny Davis, Eugene
Pincham, Joe Gardner, and Roland Burris. Rev. Jakes’ community
involvement, personal and professional affiliations run the gamut.
He has earned many awards and certificates including: The 1999
Rainbow/PUSH Coalition’s Ecumenical Freedom Fighters Award,
Salem Baptist District Association Certificate Recognition; Chicago
Public Schools Award for superior performance in the Vocal Solo
Festival; Certificate of Achievement for Scholastic Effort and
Active participation in Student Government Affairs; Chicago State
University Certification or Ordination; National Baptist Publishing
Board; Chicago State University College of Education Certificate
for attending the School of Law seminar; Northern Baptist Association;
Southern Baptist Association; Special Training and Seminars; Anticipatory
Grief of patient and Family, and Death and Dying.
Rev. Jakes has been a tremendous force in the community and has
been an advocate for fair and decent housing. He accepted the
mission of helping the homeless by establishing a warming center
in the church’s annex. Other pastoral activities include
the establishment of a clothing ministry, the adoption of several
Reach Schools where programs where initiated providing self-esteem,
moral and respect for youth. He also developed the Old St. Paul
Community Center, which is located next to the church.
God has confirmed Rev. Jakes’ call to the ministry by the
many converts to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Since he began
as pastor at Old St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, over 200
persons have joined the ministry.
